Creating Emotions Through Paralanguage

In the original rendition of “Cruel Summer,” Taylor Swift’s powerful vocals and heartfelt storytelling create a profound connection among women who have experienced the pain of a love gone wrong. The combination of fast beats and an emotionally charged bridge allows listeners to immerse themselves in the lyrics, feeling every word as if it were their own. Sellnow describes this artistic technique as paralanguage. According to Sellnow, paralanguage is “the nonverbal cues that accompany words (e.g., pitch, volume, rate, pauses) to convey the emotional tone of a message.” (page 172) When the paralanguage is changed, it can completely transform the emotional tone of a song, convey a different message, and establish a whole new atmosphere for the song to exist in.

However, in Kory Wheeler’s acoustic cover of Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” a slower tempo takes hold, accompanied by the intimate strumming of a single guitar. This transformative rendition of the song gives the song new life and meaning. Rather than being a girl power anthem, it becomes a heart-wrenching journey in which Wheeler uses deliberate rhythm and pacing. Wheeler uses each pause and voice inflection to add depth to the already-charged lyrics, evoking a new set of emotions within the listener.

Wheeler’s cover uses a delicate balance of paralanguage cues to transform the emotional nature of the original composition. It invites the listener to embark on an evocative journey as the artist’s voice tells a tale of vulnerability and introspection. Through Wheeler’s interpretation, “Cruel Summer” becomes an intimate ballad, invoking an entirely new feeling different from the original.

  1. TAYLOR SWIFT & ORIGINALITY

Taylor Swift has become a Pop Culture icon for break-up songs and I think your analysis of her use of paralanguage as described by Sellnow in “The Rhetorical Power of Pop Culture” was accurate. I believe that Taylor Swift is an amazing artist. However, I feel most of her music sounds the same or at least has the same type of theme. Some examples of this can be seen in and "Love Story" & "Trouble When You Walked In". Love Story’s music video and song came out in 2010 and Trouble When You Walked In was released 3 years later in 2015. However, both songs have very similar patterns and themes with one another. This is just one example of Taylor Swift’s popular songs that are very similar but there are several others. Are there any examples that you can think of? Overall, this theme or originality in Pop Culture Music is explained by Theodor Adorno in the “Cultural Theory and Popular Culture a Reader” book.

    IS TAYLOR SWIFT A SELLOUT

I think most artists want to just be creative and compensated for their hard work. I am sure Taylor Swift is aware of her lack of originality over the years. However, I believe this is not only on her but a totality of everything. When it comes to the repetitiveness of Pop Culture some people such as Marxists theorize it is the “elite” that controls what is created. However, at the end of the day we as the audience and as consumers are the people that allow this overplayed artist to make a profit. Again based on your analysis that was strongly objective and based on strong theory Taylor Swift’s music is well written and produced but how much do managers have a say in the creative process? In other words, do you think that Taylor Swift has full control of her music and enjoys creating these songs repetitive types of songs, or do think the music industry has made Taylor who she is and she continues to create these songs for profit?

    SELLNOW & TAYLOR SWIFT

In the last sections, I questioned Taylor Swift’s originality, the control of her music, and the fan base due to her repetitiveness and lack of being creative over the years. However, Taylor’s song "Anti-Hero" won several awards this year which I believe she deserves conflicting with my previous statements. For example, I believe this artifact’s success can be explained by the “Illusion of Life Theory”. This theory is described in “The Rhetorical Power of Popular Culture” book by Sellnow which states successful media within Pop Culture often occurs due to being original, genuine, and conveying emotion.

    STORYTELLING & RELATBILITY

An observation theory I made to Sellnow’s explained “Illusion of Life Theory” is the power of storytelling and relatability. The artifact Anti Hero as discussed above does this well as seen in the execution of the music video. By making catchy easy-to-follow lyrics that have a narrative it keeps the audience intrigued and allows the artist to feel relatable to their fans. In conclusion, making the art piece more profound. One Artist who executes this very well and some people like to say she is the “New Taylor Swift” is Olvia Rodrigo. Each song Olivia creates is original due to her story-driven plot that feels almost relatable to everyone.

    1. OLVIA RODRIGO’S MUSICAL EXECUTION

Olvia is so articulate with her storytelling that if you can not relate with her based on your own experience you can visualize what she is saying and empathize with her. In fact in one of the comment sections on Youtube of Olvia Rodrigo’s “Tiny Desk,” someone states “ I am a 38-year-old man and every time I listen to this it makes me feel like a teenage girl.” Although Olivia Rodrigo is one of the best that I have seen recently who has this ability to write storytelling music she is not the only one with this talent for there are several other examples that can be seen throughout music. If you would like to see what I am referencing regarding Olvia’s music-writing skills review her tiny desks below.

      CONCLUSION

Do you think this concept of storytelling and relatability is a good addition to the “Illusion of Life Theory” or is this something that you think it already covers? If not, do you think it is something worth researching? What are some examples of these observations that you have seen the power of storytelling and reliability influence Pop Culture?
