Would
you vote for a candidate because that candidate trended on media? According to the article How Does Pop
Culture Influence Political Moments? by Susan Smith Richardson: We are more
influenced by our pop culture than we think (Richardson, 2022). As we learned in Module 1, Pop culture is
indeed ubiquitous. Are we picking up
political views from the pop culture cues?
Polls indicate we are. |
According to the article The Rhetorical Power of Popular Culture: Considering Mediated Texts, “popular culture persuades by empowering and dis-empowering certain people . . .” Which people? Is persuasion empowering and dis-empowering by design? According to presidential campaigns?
The answer is yes!

As I read each article and reflected on the power of Pop Culture, I could not help but think of how influential the media has become during elections. Social media has become essential to running a competitive campaign. It is not only used in national campaigns but local campaigns as well. Why do we study Pop Culture? Because Pop Culture influences the decision we make, it reflects who we are and poses the essential questions of our day |

Studying pop culture for my application is important because universities are looking for relevant research. Universities require applicants to have Social Awareness. Pop culture can raise awareness about important social issues. What the pulse of the population is, which TV shows, movies, and music are on target when addressing topics like discrimination, mental health, and environmental concerns, sparking discussions and encouraging positive change. |
