Feminism in Superhero Films

More superhero films are being produced now with females portrayed as the superheroes saving the world. Filmmakers are starting to create more female-fronted superhero stories, bringing representation of women characters in action movies. These films are promoting feminism and showing us, the audience, that girls can be superheroes too. Women have always been included in superhero films but mainly as sidekicks or love interests. However, now it seems that recent films have been more inclusive of women being super heroes and the star of the show.

These films mainly represent a liberal feminist perspective, which according to Sellnow, “A liberal feminist perspective focuses primarily on providing opportunities for the inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated areas.”

For example, Elastigirl from the Incredibles, quotes: “Girls, come on. Leave the saving of the world to the men? I don’t think so.” This quote alone provides opportunities for the inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated areas, such as saving the world. Most superheroes are men which alleviates young girls to believe that they aren’t strong enough or built to save the world like men are.

Additionally, In Avengers: Endgame, there is a moment in the final battle with Thanos where the female Avengers come together to help protect the Infinity Stones and fight against Thanos to win the battle. This scene illustrates “girl-power” and feminism, showing that the women are working together to stop the villain with full confidence and unity.

Finally, Madame Web is coming out in theaters in February, where Dakota Johnson stars as a paramedic who develops the power to see the future and forges a relationship with 3 young women in attempts to protect them from a mysterious adversary who is trying to kill them. I assume that this movie will have feminist perspectives based on the trailer, especially as the female lead is a paramedic and a superhero.

What are your thoughts on the recent increase in feminism and female superheroes in action/superhero films? Do you believe that women are experiencing a greater sense of empowerment through this representation?

  1. I love this increase in female presence in superhero movies. One thing I've also noticed beyond just the inclusion of more female superheroes, is how the costumes are becoming more and more functional and protective like male superhero costumes are instead of sexy and revealing. One of my favorite things is hearing how Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) approached producers and costume makers about the new costume she would have for her character in the series WandaVision. When the character was first introduced, her costume was a low-cut top and short skirt. For the new series, Elizabeth Olson asked to cover up a little bit more, resulting in a much higher neckline and long pants. Despite the female protagonist covering her body more, the series was highly successful, revealing that women superheroes do not need to be scantily clad for their movies and shows to compete with those of male heroes. In addition, I believe the lack of revealing clothing urges creators to spend more time on personality and character development instead of treating female superheroes just as eye candy.
